Integration of PACS and HIS


Abstract
In this paper, we have investigated the current status of PACS and HIS integration, and described a new approach that is in progress in Seoul national university hospital.
First, the necessities for the PACS and HIS integration has been described in respect of computing environment, user's convenience, andsystem management in the hospital. The characteristics of the HIS, RIS, and PACS have been investigated, and
their
transaction relationship involved in the several patient care procedures have been analyzed, followed by the description of three message communication models that can be used for system integration. Examples of PACS and HIS integration have been
investigated that have been tried in various hospitals such as Washington university hospital, UCLA medical center, Florida university hospital, Veterans Affairs hospitals in Washinton and Baltimore, Utrecht university hospital in Netherland,
Free
university hospital in Belgium, and the Philipps university hospital in Germany.
Finally described is a new approach to PACS and HIS integration that is in progress in Seoul National University Hospital. In this approach, high speed LAN and multimedia database are to be shared between PACS and HIS in order to allow fast
communication of both text and image data, thereby providing totally integrated imaging and data services to the clinical users in a single user environment.
